Project:
Weighing Room Extension and Alterations

Location: Thirsk Racecourse, Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Size: 365m2

Year: 2016-17

The refurbishment and extension of the Weighing Room at Thirsk Racecourse was a much-needed upgrade to bring the facility in line with current updated standards. Originally unchanged for over 25 years, the existing building was no longer meeting the demands of modern racing and required significant improvements to enhance both functionality and comfort for jockeys and other race day personnel.

This redevelopment project involved a thoughtful reconfiguration and expansion of the building. Key enhancements included an increased provision of spaces for female jockeys, reflecting the growing participation of women in the sport. Additionally, new areas for drug testing were added to streamline compliance processes, alongside a larger canteen that provides a more comfortable break out space. The canteen also includes an adjoining physio room to support the physical well-being of jockeys. Furthermore, a dedicated space was created for winning connections, offering a more private and celebratory environment for owners and their teams.

The remaining areas of the Weighing Room also received a full refurbishment, ensuring that all aspects of the facility met modern standards.

Despite the scope of the project, the work was efficiently completed within a six-month timeframe over the winter break, from September 2016 to March 2017, allowing the racecourse to be fully operational for the summer racing season. The successful completion of this project has revitalized the Weighing Room, ensuring it meets the needs of all its users and aligns with the expectations of a leading racecourse facility.

This project was completed in March 2018.
