New Dwelling

Year: 2019

Primrose Cottage, located on the outskirts of Richmond, was transformed from a dated and impractical home into a modern, light-filled space that meets the needs of contemporary living. The property, which had not been updated in many years, featured numerous small, compartmentalized rooms and a cramped kitchen, resulting in a lack of flow and a dark, closed-off atmosphere.

The clients’ brief called for opening up as much of the ground floor as possible to create an airy, cohesive space, as well as building a two-storey extension to increase the floor area. This extension allowed for more spacious, usable bedrooms on the first floor, enhancing the overall functionality of the home.

Natural light was a crucial focus for the renovation, as the original house felt dim and enclosed. To address this, large expanses of glazing were introduced into each bay, allowing light to flood the rooms and brighten even the farthest corners of the kitchen area. The result was a bright and open atmosphere that radically transformed the feel of the home.

The hallway, unusually large compared to the rest of the house, was preserved and became a central design element. The clients envisioned a bespoke feature staircase to serve as the focal point of the home’s architectural design. After careful measurements and innovative thinking, a curved staircase was crafted, providing an elegant and dramatic centerpiece that enhances the overall aesthetic.

Completed in 2022, the project was a collaboration between KCA, the clients and their daughter, who played an integral role in the interior design process. Their vision has resulted in a stunning interior, blending functionality with beauty and ensuring that Primrose Cottage is not only practical but a delight to live in.
