Weighing Room and New Offices Development

Location: Hamilton Park, Hamilton, Scotland

Size: 380m2

Year: 2022

The refurbishment and extension of the Weighing Room at Hamilton Racecourse was a concept scheme initiated in 2022 following the release of the revised British Horseracing Authority (BHA) standards. While Hamilton Racecourse itself is neither listed nor located in a conservation area, the existing Weighing Room holds historical significance. It is recognized as the only known historic weighing room in Scotland, making it a unique architectural example. The building's fine classical design, rendered in simple materials, contributes positively to the overall aesthetic of the racecourse's crescent-shaped group of buildings.

The original concept aimed to not only modernize and expand the weighing room but also replace the existing temporary office structures housed in portacabin-style buildings. The proposal involved linking the historic weighing room with a new extension and office space. The design for the new offices was intended to reflect the traditional style of the listed building, ensuring that the architecture remained sympathetic to the site's historic character.

The key feature of the proposed extension was a modern link structure, which was designed to be simple yet distinct, incorporating metal zinc cladding that wrapped seamlessly around both the walls and the roof. This contrast of traditional and modern elements sought to provide the necessary space while respecting the heritage of the existing weighing room.

However, due to budget constraints, the project did not progress to the planning stage and was ultimately scaled back to fit within the available funding. Despite this, the initial design concept highlights the thoughtful balance between preserving Scotland's racing heritage and addressing the modern needs of the racecourse.
